The field of participants for the 19th edition of the Dolomitencup is complete! When the renowned pre-season tournament takes place in the Würtharena in Neumarkt (South Tyrol) from August 15 to 17, 2025, EV Landshut, a club that has played a key role in writing German ice hockey history, will also be there.
HC Dynamo Pardubice, who are currently fighting for the championship title in the final of the Extraliga, come from the hockey-mad Czech Republic. The Frankfurt Lions, who have been a permanent fixture in the German Ice Hockey League for years, are traveling from Hesse. From the Norwegian capital Oslo, Vålerenga Ishockey, the country’s most successful ice hockey club, is heading for Neumarkt. And now the fourth and final participant in the Dolomitencup has also been announced: EV Landshut, one of the most traditional clubs in German ice hockey, is coming to the South Tyrolean Unterland from Lower Bavaria.
The Red & Whites currently play in DEL2, the second-highest league in Germany. However, the history that Landshut will bring with them to the Würtharena is undoubtedly first league worthy. If only because the EVL, founded in 1948, played in Germany’s top league without interruption from 1964 to 1999 and was a founding member of the DEL in 1994. Incidentally, the cracks from the Bavarian southeast won the German championship in 1970 and 1983.
Ice hockey legends and Stanley Cup winners
Landshut achieved nationwide fame in particular because of its legendary players. First and foremost Erich Kühnhackl, who was voted “German Ice Hockey Player of the Century” in 2000. In his career, the now 74-year-old scored more than 700 goals, led Landshut to two championship titles and is now regarded as the Franz Beckenbauer of ice hockey. His son Tom Kühnhackl was trained in the Landshut talent factory – and is now a two-time Stanley Cup winner. The legendary Marco Sturm also started his career in Landshut, from where he went straight to the NHL in 1997 – where he played more than 1,000 games. Today, EV Landshut is one of the big names in DEL2 and has been fighting for its long-awaited return to the top flight of German ice hockey for several years. Last season ended in the quarter-finals – but the loyal and passionate fans are already looking ahead to next winter. In the hope that the Dolomitencup is a good omen. In exactly four months’ time, things will kick off in Neumarkt and spectators from near and far will once again make the pilgrimage to the South Tyrolean lowlands. Ticket sales have already started.
